Inspiring people series — vol. 2

Sancho’s is a sustainable and ethical fashion and lifestyle shop that sources affordable products that are alternative to the high street, with the aim of creating a fairer, better world for everyone. Situated on Exeter’s independent street, Fore street, Sancho’s is the south west’s answer to ethical and sustainable shopping. With an online shop too, Sancho’s is the home of sustainable fashion.

Started in 2014 by Kalkidan Legesse and Vidmantas Markevicius, Sancho’s started as a pop up shop with hand made items from Ethiopia, Kalkidan’s mother country, and has since evolved into a shop that hosts many ethical and sustainable brands from small makers to larger sustainable businesses. Each item is hand-picked for its commitment to natural and organic fibres or recycled content, and every piece is made fairly in ethical conditions.

In the last year Sancho’s has introduced more black owned brands and inclusively sized brands than ever before, as well as stocking our customer favourites such as the Oliana jumpsuit that is easy to wear, comfortable and flattering. One customer says “It’s so comfortable, super soft and a great fit! I often struggle finding jumpsuits but this one fits like a glove! I loved it so much I’ve bought another!”.

We have stocked Lefrik bags at Sancho’s for a few years now, and they have become another one of our customer favourites! From back to school to weekend adventures, Lefrik bags are beautifully made and built to last, and our customers agree! One of our customers said “I bought this backpack as an everyday bag to use for my laptop and books (I'm a student), and it's the perfect size. There's enough space for my laptop and water bottle and anything I need without it being too bulky. I also love the pocket which faces the back because that's a secure place to keep my valuables. Would definitely recommend!”

1. Investing in a company that’s doing good, allowing them to do more good in the future 2. allowing them to have employees that are treated fairly. And 3. Showing the world that we can create incredible things from waste.

Lefrik bags are made from post-consumer plastic waste that would otherwise end up in landfill and emit harmful CO2 that causes global warming. As sad as this fact is, creating an item from recycled materials, by fairly payed and treated workers is RARE. Investing in (buying from) companies like this tells society that we demand better – better products, made from better materials, and better working conditions for all.
