Live Sessions: Gala Pont

Illustrating the pandemic lockdown.

During the lockdown we started our Live Sessions where we talked, collaborate and got to know inspiring people and their projects and thoughts.

Gala Pont  is a captivating illustrator full of sensitivity who took part of our first LS back in March. She did a drawing live in our IG profile to illustrate the lockdown. Now, she was kind enough to answer a few questions about her life and work.

For people who don’t know you – who is Gala Pont?

I was born in Granollers (a city near Barcelona) in 1992. I combined my studies in Fine Arts and a Postgraduate degree in design at EINA, with self-taught training as an illustrator. I am currently working as an illustrator and I am also learning to be a teacher. I never would have thought I would be so interested in teaching, but it seems so.

How did you become an illustrator?

I guess I became interested in illustration from a very young age. When I was seven, a teacher (Rosa) told us stories in class and then asked us to draw a picture. I made one that she really liked and put it in a special place in the classroom, this made me think I wanted to draw things that people would explain to me. Some teachers and my family explained to me that this was to illustrate. As a teenager, during high school I began to illustrate stories that families and individuals ordered me. It was a way to research if it was a job I enjoyed, practice with real clients, and earn some money to travel in the summer.

Do you have any new hobbies you've picked up while spending this much time around home?

Perhaps my most practiced hobby during the pandemic was talking for many hours on the balcony with my roommates. We also did yoga every day, cooked and read. But I would emphasize that the pandemic has turned our coexistence into a very good friendship.

This week was International Women's Day, so if you had to pick a woman you admire or has inspired you, who would it be?

With the project I currently have in hand, I discovered Marianne North. She was a botanical illustrator born in 1830, who traveled the world (twice) painting strange species of flowers and plants. Also the women of my family are always a reference.

In your illustrations we can see woman and plants being two main topics. What inspires you?

I think I am inspired by many little things that are part of my day to day life; friends, movies, books, pictures ... It's hard to be specific when we live surrounded by so many visual stimuli. If I think about it from a distance, however, the three themes that articulate my work would be: The (love) relationships between people, the kitchen and everything around it and nature (especially plants and study of these).
